Roof framing, to begin with, is just what it sounds like: you or your contractor are constructing the framework for the roof that will be installed on top of your house.  It involves a lot of lumber, as one might anticipate. Practically speaking, roof framing can determine cost, functionality, and architectural beauty.  A flat roof can be less expensive than some gabled roofs, but it may collect more rainwater than a roof with peaks.

Stick Framing

The core and crucial component of stick framing is the top beam, also known as the ridge, which is attached to each individual rafter.  More boards are positioned horizontally to cover the entire structure.  Since stick framing creates an open triangle between the ceiling joists and rafters, it is employed on structures with cathedral ceilings, attic rooms, or storage spaces. By altering the area, removing an attic level to create a more open room, or using alternative modeling ideas, stick framing can be readily modified and altered later if necessary.

Framing of Trusses

Gable and hip roofs are used to produce roofs in truss framing.  Prior to installation, they are built using triangle shapes that are reinforced with numerous additional wood planks.  Compared to stick framing, truss framing is more durable and substantial due to its extensive reinforcement.  They don’t need as much upkeep and are simpler to install.
